About the Job
The Contractor shall use instrumentation located in Building 223, Rooms A330 and A310, to develop an optical nanocalorimetry test system and perform optical nanocalorimetry based materials property measurements.? The development of the optical nanocalorimetry method shall entail constructing an optical test system using components provided by NIST, and methodological investigation of the performance of the system including accuracy and reproducibility, measurements on standard reference materials, and comparison with existing nanocalorimeter results and with conventional Dynamic Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) results.? The number of experiments shall be sufficient to derive reliable conclusions.? For example, for correlation tests, values of R-squared greater than 0.?8 or less than 0.?2 shall be expected to confirm or refute relationships.? For material and device property value determinations, relative standard deviations of less than 0.?3 are required.? As required, the Contractor shall assist NIST personnel in fabrication of optical nanocalorimetry chips and devices, using the NIST cleanroom Nanofabrication Facility of the Advanced Measurements Laboratory (AML, Building 215).
Important functions of the NIST Ceramics Division are dissemination of research results describing development of new measurement methods and standards for advanced materials and engagement with customers and peer developers of such measurement methods.? One dissemination and engagement mechanism is the presentation of the results by talks, posters, and discussions with customers and other researchers at technical meetings.? Accordingly, the Division requires the Contractor to attend and present a research paper at one technical meeting (chosen by mutual consent between the Contractor and NIST) during the term of the contract.
Specific Tasks and Performance Requirements
The Contractor shall provide all support for project oversight, administration and technical execution of this task order.? The Contractor is responsible for maintaining accurate records of project activities.? The Contractor shall:
Proof-of-concept design: The Contractor shall use numerical analysis (i.?e.? Finite element analysis) and experimental methods to determine optimal design requirements and specifications for a prototype optical nanocalorimeter device.? The Contractor shall determine the ideal device physical configuration, instrumentation, and measurement techniques to measure the sample temperature and heat flow (heat generation) as a function of time at rates up to 1 MHz.? If necessary, the Contractor shall assist in the design and fabrication of alternative nanocalorimeter designs.
The Contractor shall prepare a technical research publication describing the design of the optical nanocalorimeter devices suitable for publication in a peer reviewed journal.
Build and Evaluate Prototype Optical Nanocalorimeter: The Contractor shall construct and evaluate suitable prototypes for optical nanocalorimeters to establish the resolution of the device (expressed in nJ/?°C) as well as validate the models developed in Task 1.? The Contractor shall develop a method to calibrate the temperature and heat flux measurements.? If necessary, the Contractor shall assist in fabrication of alternative cantilever designs.
The Contractor shall prepare a technical research publication describing the evaluation of the optical nanocalorimeter devices suitable for publication in a peer reviewed journal.
Perform Measurements with the Prototype system: The Contractor shall perform experiments to measure the thermodynamic properties of materials samples using the optical nanocalorimeter prototype system developed in Task 2.? Samples representing different classes of materials (lipids, polymers, metals, reaction in a thin film system) should be tested and results compared to measurements made using existing nanocalorimeter devices at NIST and conventional DSC calorimetry.
The Contractor shall prepare a technical research publication describing the results of initial materials measurements performed using the optical nanocalorimeter devices suitable for publication in a peer reviewed journal.
The Contractor shall ensure that all research procedures shall be fully documented such that the research could be duplicated independently.? The accuracy of the results shall be consistent with similar measurements in the recent published literature.? Uncertainty analysis shall comply with NIST publication requirements as specified in Technical Note 1297, “Guidelines for Evaluating and Expressing Uncertainty of NIST Measurement Results” ( http://physics. ?nist.?gov/?Pubs/?guidelines/?contents.?html ).? Reports shall use SI units as specified in NIST Special Publication 811, “Guide for the Use of the International System of Units (SI)” ( http://physics.?nist.? gov/?cuu/?pdf/?sp811.?pdf ).
Quality of work will be assessed by the Technical Information Contact (TIC), based on the Contractor’s proficiency in nanocalorimetry as determined by comparison with noise and uncertainty levels of comparable measurements in the scientific literature, and by the suitability of data to the purpose, i.?e.?, by meeting the correlation coefficient and relative standard deviation values set forth above.? Reports will be examined and reviewed by the TIC to evaluate the Contractor’s performance.
Deliverables and Deliverable Due Dates
The Contractor shall prepare and submit Task-based reports to the Technical Contact within five business days of completion of a Task.? All reports shall be submitted electronically in MS Word format.? Each report shall contain the following sections: Introduction, Experimental Procedure, Data Analysis, and Summary or Conclusions.? Each report shall identify the equipment used, the specimen preparations, the measurement conditions, raw and processed measurement results, images as constructed in the Tasks, and all calculated or otherwise derived results specified in the Tasks.? Portions of the reports should be prepared in the style of manuscripts suitable for submission to peer-reviewed technical journals such as Applied Physics Letters or Journal of Applied Physics.? Three reports are required:
Report for Task 1:
A report on the optimal device design, specifications and measurement strategies for the prototype optical nanocalorimeter shall be prepared.? If necessary, the report shall include details of device fabrication procedures and measurement strategies.
Report for Task 2:
A report on the performance of the prototype optical nanocalorimeter shall be prepared.? The report should summarize test results that demonstrate the device sensitivity and maximum measurement rate.? The report shall compare and contrast optical nanocalorimeter results with results from existing nanocalorimeters.
Report for Task 3:
A report on the test results for different materials tested with the prototype optical nanocalorimeter shall be prepared.? If necessary, individual reports summarizing the methods, data analysis strategies and results for different classes of materials may be submitted.
Standards for Acceptance of Deliverables:
The TIC will provide comments on each deliverable within 5 calendar days from receipt of a given deliverable.? The Contractor shall make any needed changes to the reports within 7 calendar days from receipt of electronic or written comments from the TIC.? The TIC will provide written notification when deliverable is accepted.
The objective of this project is to develop a new measurement method, optical nanocalorimetry, to measure nanomaterial properties and reactions, and enable thermodynamic assessment of wafer-scale combinatorial materials libraries
